Gymkhana Club

Historical golf course created in 1844 by the English Royal Navy, the Gymkhana Club is the old hand of the south hemisphere golf courses and the 4th oldest golf course in the world ! Quite short, it offers some difficulties to golfers, as it requires precise and technical shots. This beautiful ‘garden” edged by centennial trees is filled with colours by the bougainvillea, Gabonese tulips, elms, araucarias, palm trees, and other exotic trees…

Gymkhana Club

The Gymkhana Club’s golf course

Mauritius being an old English colony, the Gymkhana Club golf course is thus the oldest course of the south hemisphere and the fourth oldest golf course in the world ! Created by the English Royal Navy around 1844, it made Mauritius the 3rd country to ever have a golf course, after the United Kingdom and India.
First of all a 9 holes golf course, this veteran amongst golf courses in Mauritius, called “the ambassadors’ golf” by some, was transformed in 1950 in a 14 holes course, then a par 68 18 holes golf course of 4.870 metres.

One and only 18 holes golf course located in the very middle of the island, in Vacoas, it is still an unforgettable experience by virtue of its History. Proud to be a historical golf, the Gymkhana Club gives out to every golfer a certificate to attest he or she played on a course where golf was first played in 1844.
Because of a relatively modest surface, the Gymkhana Club golf course is thus shorter compared to the other golf courses of Mauritius. However, it compensates for it with some difficulties and requires a lot of precision.

For a long time reserved to Mauritian members, the Gymkhana Club now opens its doors to globetrotter golfers. Considered as the most accessible of the 18 holes courses, it offers a low-priced green fee for non-members and a temporary member package.

The Gymkhana Club’s Clubhouse

The Clubhouse of the Gymkhana Club, an old colonial building, is both comfortable and welcoming…
Bar, restaurant, library, and a conference room, all these spaces still exhale the fragrances of an English Club. The impression collection of trophies and the coats of arms from military vessels that stopped in Mauritius take us back in its History. Very few clubs can pretend to such a prestigious past. A pleasant travel back in time, with the possibility to taste the day’s menu, included in the green fee ! You will also have at your disposal at the Gymkhana Club : a pool, grass tennis courts, squash courts, and a fitness centre.

The Gymkhana Club’s golf academy

It welcomes players regardless of their level, for individual or group lessons by reservation.
